High Precision Ceramic Balls

Steel balls have served industry for over a century, but they have inherent limits: they rust, they conduct electricity, they magnetize, and they fail in corrosive or high-temperature environments. ジルコニア (ZrO?) ceramic balls solve all of these problems in a single material. These dense ceramic spheres deliver a unique combination of hardness, toughness, 耐食性, and dimensional stability that makes them the preferred choice for demanding bearing, valve, ポンプ, and milling applications.

主な特長:

  • Thermal Expansion Close to Steel – Zirconia’s coefficient of thermal expansion is remarkably close to that of stainless steel and chrome steel. This is a critical advantage in hybrid bearings where ceramic balls run against steel races. As temperature changes, the ceramic balls and steel races expand and contract at similar rates, maintaining consistent preload and contact angle. This is the reason zirconia is often preferred over silicon nitride for hybrid bearings operating across broad temperature ranges.

  • High Fracture Toughness for Impact Resistance – Among oxide ceramics, zirconia offers the highest fracture toughness, making it far more resistant to chipping and cracking than alumina or other brittle ceramics. This toughness is essential in applications involving repeated impact, 振動, or moderate shock loads, such as valve balls in high-pressure pumps and grinding media in agitated mills.

  • Excellent Corrosion Resistance – ZrO2 is chemically inert in most acids, アルカリ, and saline solutions. In corrosion testing, zirconia surfaces showed less than 0.05 mm/year degradation in pH 1–14 media, and hybrid bearings submerged in 5% HCl for 72 hours exhibited less than 0.03% mass loss, compared to over 1.5% for 440C steel. The only notable exception is hydrofluoric acid (HF) and prolonged exposure to steam or hot water.
  • Electrically Insulating and Non-Magnetic – Unlike steel balls, which conduct electricity and retain residual magnetism, zirconia ceramic balls are completely electrically insulating (>1013 Ω·cm) and non-magnetic. This makes them ideal for use in MRI-compatible equipment, 半導体製造, and any application where stray currents or magnetic interference would cause problems.
  • Density and Weight Advantages – At 6.0 g/cm3, zirconia is about 24% 鋼鉄より軽い (7.85 g/cm3), reducing centrifugal forces at high rotational speeds. While not as light as silicon nitride (3.2 g/cm3), zirconia’s higher density is an advantage in grinding media applications where impact energy is critical.

アプリケーション

  • Precision Bearing Balls – Zirconia balls are used as rolling elements in ハイブリッドセラミックベアリング (zirconia balls + steel races) そして full ceramic bearings (zirconia rings + zirconia balls). They are particularly suited for bearings operating in corrosive, non-lubricated, or high-temperature environments where steel balls would fail.

  • Valve Balls and Check Balls – Zirconia balls are widely used as valve balls in high-pressure homogenizers, diaphragm pumps, metering pumps, oilfield oil pumps, and high-pressure spray guns. Their corrosion resistance, 硬度, and smooth surface ensure reliable sealing and long service life in aggressive fluid-control applications.

  • ポンプと流体の取り扱い – Zirconia balls are used in submersible pump bearings, pump seals, impellers, and shaft guides, where resistance to rust, chemical attack, and metal contamination is essential.

  • Grinding and Milling Media – High-density zirconia beads (0.03mm–25mm) are used in ball mills, sand mills, and agitator mills for grinding and dispersing materials to micron or nanometer size. Their high density and hardness deliver strong impact and shear forces, while their low wear rate minimizes contamination of the processed material. Applications include lithium-ion battery materials, electronic ceramics, high-end coatings, inks, pharmaceuticals, 食べ物, and cosmetics.

  • Measurement and Track Balls – Zirconia balls serve as measurement balls in metrology equipment そして track balls in precision pointing devices, where their dimensional stability and low friction are valuable.

  • Chemical and Petrochemical Industry – The bearing and valve industries rely on zirconia balls for equipment handling aggressive chemicals, where metal contamination or corrosion would compromise product purity or equipment reliability.
